In Foundation Stage and Year 1 we follow the Floppy's Phonics Sounds and Letters programme to teach children to read. Children have a phonics lesson every day and in this lesson they revise sounds that they've already learned, learn a new sound and practise blending sounds to read words.
From Year 2 onwards phonics teaching continues for those children that still need it to help them read. This may be through whole class teaching, small intervention groups or one to one teaching depending on the needs of the children.
Your child will bring a reading book home from school every day and it crucial that you listen to them read each night. Children read individually and in small groups several times a week in school, but the more practise that they do, the more fluent readers they will become. Therefore, we really appreciate support from parents with reading.
The children all have a planner and there is space in the planner for you to make a note of what they have read to you at home so that their teacher can change their book when necessary.
We have books from several reading schemes in school. These are listed to the right, with links to websites where available.
