Forest Schools at Bentley High Street Primary School

Bentley High Street Forest School was established in Autumn 2013 with sessions beginning in Spring 2013. The Forest School initiative grew from our outdoor learning teams desire to provide an alternative curriculum at Bentley High Street that reflected the naturally stunning Robin Woodland.

Through Forest School, as an environmentally based initiative, children whom come along to Bentley High Street School are able to develop a life long love and understanding of the natural environment. Thus developing the core purposes of the Forest School ethos, namely, development of their inner self-esteem, confidence and social skills. Activities, carefully planned, for children from foundation right up to KS2 take part in three blocks of Forest School these are: half a day covering the basics of outdoor learning; a full day in the woodland exploring the nature of play and a six week programme which enable children to excel in all areas of their personal, academic and spiritual development.

Our shared philosophy, which underpins the Forest School movement, is to focus on the individual of any age from 3 years upwards; we set achievable tasks in a rich woodland environment, to develop the growth in confidence and independence so that they sustain a sense of self-worth. Children whom attend our sessions will acquire new soft skills that ready them for our challenging and exciting activities, whilst remaining safe and controlled.

We operate two separate Forest School sites, due to environmental impact and over usage both are risk assessed.  The main focus for regular activities is in Robin Woodland, this site we adopt from Doncaster Metropolitan Council and is very close to the school itself and easily accessible. The other is our spoke site, down one side of our school field; it has recently been cleared and restored, as previously the area has lain derelict for more than ten years. The freedom of the ‘Robin Woodland’ allows the children the opportunity to experience remoteness and a realistic experience in which they are able to practise their skills and further develop their understanding of a woodland environment.
