Learning Monsters

At Bentley High Street, we believe in celebrating excellent learning as well as achievement.

It was once thought that intelligence was fixed and each person had a certain amount of intelligence but this idea has now changed. Leading professionals, such as Professor Guy Claxton and Professor Carol Dweck,  state that intelligence is not fixed but can be expanded, and just as you exercise physical muscles to make them grow, you need to exercise your “learning muscles”.

Claxton devised 4 R’s of Building Learning Power: Resilience, Resourcefulness, Reflectiveness and Reciprocity. As a school, we  took this idea and developed our own Learning Monsters, bespoke for our children.

Resilience became Resilient Ricky, Resourcefulness became Fix it Fiona/Fred, Reflectiveness became Thoughtful Theodore and Reciprocity became Empathetic Ethel and Listening Larry. We then also created Learning Monsters for our Foundation children.

Children were then asked to think of what characteristics each of these Learning Monsters would show. All the ideas in this booklet were thought of by children, for children at Bentley High Street Primary School.
