This week we will continue reading our focus text:  ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’.

Refer to the graphic organiser from Friday. Discuss what happens first, then and finally.


First the goats cross the bridge

Model writing what happens first, then and finally.


Who are the characters in the story? Refer back to the spider diagram made last week talking about what the characters are like.


Hot seat the characters from the story. Teacher to model being hot seated then children to have a go. Think of what questions we might ask as a group and support a range of questions from children.


  • Why wouldn’t you let the billy goats cross the bridge?
  • Would you really eat the billy goats?
  • Is it your bridge?

How else could you get across to the meadow?  


Using the story map from yesterday – explain to the children you are going to change an aspect of the story – the characters.

Instead of billy goats who might want to cross the bridge? Instead of the troll who might live under the bridge?


Talk partners to discuss what the new characters could be.


Using post-it’s change the characters following children’s suggestions. 


Explain to the chn that we are going to change another part of the story. This time we are going to change the ending of the story. What could happen instead? Will all of the Billy Goats be able to cross the bridge safely?


Model writing the new version of the story with the children using the new characters and the new ending. What will happen first, then and finally in the new version of the story?


Share children’s new story of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ celebrating children’s work and praising the use of finger spaces, capital letters etc.
